2020 Calendar

Don’t forget that the Waiuku Museum’s 2020 calendar is now available.  It is a year of vintage cooking, with a new recipe every month.  The recipes come from a hand written recipe book in the museum’s collection and are dated sometime between 1900 and 1920.  All the recipes have been tested in a modern home kitchen and updated when necessary.
The calendar costs $15.

A Brief History – J Black

In association with the Waiuku Business Association (WBA), Waiuku Museum is doing a series of brief histories about local businesses that were once in our community. The first was published in the Waiuku Wrap on the WBA website. Go and check it out and see what is happening in Waiuku.

So here is the brief history of the J Black Store.

Mr J Black opened a Men’s Outfitting store on the corner of Bowen & Queen Streets in 1913. It was one of two businesses that were the first in Waiuku to run on a cash for goods system, rather than a credit system that the other businesses used. It was advertised initially as a place where their varied stock was at prices ranging from 30 per cent to 50 per cent lower than the same items would cost in Auckland. It is uncertain how long the business was operating. There is a photo of the store in 1917 as part of a street scene of Waiuku.J Black - 1917

A Brief History – Beehive Store

In association with the Waiuku Business Association (WBA), Waiuku Museum is doing a series of brief histories about local businesses that were once in our community. The first was published in the Waiuku Wrap on the WBA website. Go and check it out and see what is happening in Waiuku.

So here is the brief history of the Beehive Store.

The Beehive store run by Stephen Perrin opened in the Flexman Building, on the corner of Bowen St and Queen St, in September 1905. The Beehive store closed and Stephen Perrin declared bankrupt in 1910. At this stage the Beehive Store was run by Stephen Perrin and his business partner Mr. Baker.

About a year after the store opened Stephen Perrin was in a bus accident on 10th October 1906. The horse drawn bus fell over an embankment and between Waipipi and Waiuku. He was badly bruised and considered that he should be confined to bed for some time.

Just before his bankruptcy trial at the Supreme Court in Auckland he fell of a train carriage platform.
